Both changes are the ear doing its job properly. The vowel really could be written ou, and the ending really does come out of the mouth as sha. What neither of them can register is that this word is a dedication. Joseph Woods lived from 1776 to 1864, worked on the architecture of Italy and Greece and on the flora of Europe, and Robert Brown put his name on a genus of small mountain ferns. The two letters that hold the tribute together are the o's.
